Translator / Interpreter Khmer and English

Summary of Position

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia (OHCHR-Cambodia) under the overall guidance of the Representative of the Office of the High Commissioner is looking for a Translator / Interpreter Khmer and English with 5 years experiences.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for translating and exercising quality control and on-time delivery of translations of documents and publications in Khmer to English and vice-versa
  • Translate reports and statements of the Office and the Special Rapporteur, international human rights instruments, UN resolutions and documents, publications, and Office correspondences from English to Khmer or vice-versa
  • Act as official interpreter of the Office in official functions or as required
  • Support Programme Units in translating relevant documents into Khmer and English (or French) as well as drafting correspondences in Khmer
  • Keep and update a database of translated documents, publications, and other materials
  • Support to Communications Unit in the implementation of programmes, activities and public awareness campaigns to promote human rights
  • Translate public information materials, scripts, website stories, press statements, media advisories, newsletters and other communication tools from English to Khmer or vice-versa
  • Contribute in conceptualizing and implementing communication events and massmedia campaigns
  • Assist in carrying out Unit activities including providing interpretation support during public events or coordination with partner organizations as required
  • Support to management in the over-all implementation of the Office Annual Work Plan
  • Assist in the review and planning of Office programme plan
  • Act as interpreter for visitors and delegations on mission as required
  • Assist the Representative, Deputy Representative and Communication Officer in any other related area of work, as appropriate
  • Perform other tasks as required, including support to other programmes

Education

  • Secondary Education. Bachelor degree in communication, languages, political and social sciences or related field is desirable but not a requirement
  • Diploma or Certificate in English language proficiency training or test an asset

Experience

  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience in translation and interpretation
  • Knowledge of legal and human rights terminology an asset
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Khmer and English
  • Knowledge of French an asset
  • Proficiency in computer use including MS Office applications
  • Skills in desktop publication, audio-video production and social networking desired but not required
  • Advanced typing skills
  • Readiness to undertake travel throughout the country
  • Respect of confidentiality, discretion and integrity
  • Good knowledge and understanding of human rights and a keep interest on the human rights situation in Cambodia
  • Familiarity of the UN system in Cambodia an added advantage

Language Requirements

  • Advanced skills in spoken and written English and Khmer
  • Strong skills in listening and comprehension
  • UN language proficiency certification is an added advantage
  • Should be able to easily interpret and translate documents and from Khmer to English and from English to Khmer
