6 Reasons to Do an Internship While Studying

Sometimes the difference between getting your dream job and not getting it is experience. Having a University is good, but if another applicant has both – a degree and work experience – he will likely get the job.

So, how do you start your career without work experience? How do you become more competitive and stand out amongst other candidates? And how do you find your real dream job?

We give you 6 reasons why doing an internship while studying can be the solution.

1 Decide if this is really the career path you want to go
Let’s be honest. Just because you are studying a specific subject doesn’t mean you are passionate about it. You might have a marketing degree and find out years later that it is more than just TV commercials. Doing an internship gives you the opportunity to test your skills and knowledge, and to find out if ‘the dream job’ really is what you thought it is.

2 Gain your first real work experience
Applying for an internship is easier than for a real job as you don’t need prior work experiences. The company is willing to train and invest in you over a certain time period as an intern. Doing an internship gives you hands on work experience, and helps you to adapt to the real work environment and understand the theories better than when you learned them at university.

3 Strengthen your CV to stand out
It’s obvious that if you have more experience, you have a better CV. Many students and graduates don’t have work experience when they leave college. This might be due to time, family or other reasons. But with an internship experience in your CV employers see immediately that you understand the differences from studying a job to doing a job. Oh, and of course you can name your employer as reference too!

4 Boost your self-confidence for job interviews
Imagine you go to a job interview but in fact you have never worked in the industry. How to convince the employer that you know how to do the job? After completing an internship you will go into a job interview knowing that you have the skills and knowledge to do the job. You will feel better prepared and this will give you more confidence for the job interview.

5 Build your network
The reality is, strong network connections can push your career. An internship gives you the opportunity to expand your professional connections and having probably one or two personal ambassadors that would be glad to help you when you need them in the future.

6 You might get a fulltime position
For many companies investing in interns is part of their social responsibility programs – but they also invest in interns, as it is one of the best ways to build candidate’s skills. If you work hard, learn and integrate yourself in the team there is a chance that you will get offered a fulltime position within the company.

Where to find an internship in Cambodia?
There is many ways to find an internship in Cambodia. You can ask your personal network if they have any connections or know of a company that could hire you. Another option is search the web. Most companies communicate internship opportunities on their website, or through Social Medias. And if you are interested to work within a specific industry but there are no internship announcements, identify a company you want to work for and send your application anyways. Express in a cover letter why you want to work espcially for them, there is a good chance that the company considers your application!

GOOD LUCK!
