How to Prepare a Job Interview

Entering a new workplace can be scary, and even the most powerful businesspeople remember at least one awkward job interview from their early days. For interviews, practice makes perfect – but that doesn’t mean that you can’t prepare beforehand.

Analyse
Make sure you analyse the job description or job posting. As you review the position think about what you can bring into the workplace, and write down your skills, experiences and personal qualities that you have for the position. A recruiter can feel if you are prepared for the job interview. If you only remember the job title, you will look silly!

Research
Collect as much information about the company as you can. Ask your personal network if they know more about the company, research on Google and search for the company’s website, LinkedIn page and Facebook page. You will also be able to find out if the company culture is a good fit for you.

Get Dressed
How you dress says a lot about you as a candidate. Smart and clean is always good, but it depends on the position you apply for. Generally, your interview outfit needs to fit the environment: If you want to work in the fashion or creative industry, dress with character. If you apply for a professional business job, dress accordingly in business attire. Don’t wait until the last minute to make sure your interview clothes are ready.

Impression
Being well presented and prepared helps to relax, which is perfect. The interviewer wants to feel your personality shine through, and especially the first impression is important: By smiley, friendly and make eye contact with the recruiter. During the interview watch your body language: Relax and lean forward a little towards the interviewer to appear engaged. Don’t sink into the chair! Keep your feet on the floor and keep your body gesture open, attentive and interested.

Listen & Ask
If you are not paying attention to the question you wont be able to give a good answer. It is important that you are concentrated and listen to the recruiter – and if you need it take your time to think of your answer. Recruiters like if you show engagement and ask some questions. But be careful, there are right and wrong questions to ask: Asking when you will get feedback is good, and questions about job too. But don’t ask only about the salary and holiday allowance, it could make you look uncommitted.

Confidence
There is a fine balance when it comes to confidence. If you are pretending to know everything – you go to far. Professional recruiters can tell if people are reliable or not, and if they really can do what they say. Be honest and confident about what your true qualifications for the job and company are.

Follow Up
At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for their time. Show confidence and express how much you are interested in having the job. One or two days later, call to follow up or send an email – this gives you an advantage and shows that you are truly committed.
